Wieger started the Food For Mars & Moon project in 2013 with its main goal to develop a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in space to feed astronauts with fresh food. Wieger is an ecologist who works on plant soil relations and the effects of nitrogen deposition and climate change on biodiversity. In his spare time, he is an amateur astronomer, an enthusiast sportsmen and collects comic books. Dr Wamelink has over 30 years of experience as an ecologist and over 10 years as a space farmer.
